Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tae Kwon Do and how is it different from other martial arts?

Seattle Tae Kwon Do studentThe martial arts were developed thousands of years ago as forms of self-defense. Karate originated in Japan and Kung Fu came from China. Tae Kwon Do is native to Korea. In terms of techniques, Tae Kwon Do emphasizes kicks more than other martial arts, making it ideal for weaker people, since the legs have greater reach and are stronger than the arms. In addition to this is makes it a much more aerobic workout which will result is better physical conditioning.

At what age can my children start?

Our youngest age we take is 2.5 years old. Starting your child young in Tae Kwon Do training is ideal (as it is also a good way to hone fine motor skills), and a lot of parents have found that in as little as a year, their children who were involved in Tae Kwon Do had noticeably gained positive traits such as increased self-esteem, respect and overall physical fitness.

Do you offer adult programs?

Yes. We offer adult programs for all shapes, sizes and skill levels. We encourage the participation of women, men, children, parents and grandparents, because everyone can benefit from the study of Tae Kwon Do. We currently have students 2.5 to 65 years old actively training at our school.

Why should I choose Seattle Tae Kwon Do?

Seattle Tae Kwon Do Instructors are accredited Black Belt and Master Instructors trained to make Tae Kwon Do training fun, safe and educational. We offer over 12 classes per day in our large, mat covered, air conditioned classrooms. We define a good class as one in which the students are smiling, sweating and learning. Everyday we do our best to empower our students to become the best they possibly can.

KickboxerDoes Tae Kwon Do increase aggressiveness?

Absolutely not. Your child will be taught from the first lesson that a true "Tae Kwon Do Kid" never misuses their martial arts skills. Throughout their training, they will be reminded that being physically and mentally tough does not allow one to be tough with others. Instead, Tae Kwon Do students are expected to be humble courteous, respectful and careful about when and where they practice their skills. The instructors at Seattle Tae Kwon Do will continually educate your child that Tae Kwon Do is a form of exercise and self improvement, not a tool for bullying.

How much does it cost?

All new students are first given a FREE trial program to see if Tae Kwon Do is a fit for them. There are no long term contracts offered in the beginning. We simply want you to try our program and see how much fun Tae Kwon Do can be for the entire family.

Do you have contracts?

Yes. However, each one is specifically written to meet your individual needs at the time. Membership Agreements, after the free trial program are designed to help the student achieve a specific rank (color belt) and to lock in sepecific benifits such as a discounted tuition rate and additional services. The agreement can be as short or as lengthy as the student desires. The longer the agreement period, the more discount is offered. An additional benefit of long agreements is that they "freeze" tomorrow's participation at today's rates.

How many classes a week may I attend?

Two classes per week is the recommended amount. This will allow you time to digest the material taught in class and allow you time to practice at home.

What is your policy regarding make up classes?

Students may make up any missed classes the week before (if you know in advance) or the week after the absence.

May I come watch a class?

All classes are open to be view from the front lobby. Parents of students are encouraged to view classes and give support to their children. A smile or thumbs up at the right time can really make a difference.

How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?

It is the journey that is most important, not the destination. We consider ourselves a Black Belt school and every student is on the path towards Black Belt from day one. On average, the journey to Black Belt takes about 3 years.

How can I cancel my membership?

Generally we used membership agreements so students can lock in discounted rates for a period of time and are non-cancellable. However we understand we do not live in a perfect world and sometimes we try our best to work with people. For more details, pick up a cancellation policy form at the front counter.
